Handmade Holiday: Homemade Peppermint Patties

There's no denying I love a good recipe with peppermint!  I use my Young Living Peppermint Vitality Oil in many of my recipes like my Homemade Thin Mints and Peppermint Bark.  It's a fantastic substitute for peppermint extract (I use much less!) and it tastes fantastic!

These little cuties are so adorable, easy-to-make, and absolutely delicious!  I know that homemade is typically "better" than store-bought, and that is definitely true for these little chocolate-covered patties!

Peppermint Patties

If I'm being honest, I've never liked the ones you can buy at the store.  I always thought they were too strong and overly sweet.  These have a nice balance of sweetness to chocolate and the amount of peppermint flavor is totally up to you!

To make the perfect little circles, I used a 1-inch cookie cutter.  You can certainly make them whatever size you like, but I found this to be the best size for dipping! You can purchase them here.

A delicious, homemade version of Peppermint Patties made with Young Living's Peppermint Vitality Essential Oil! (Adapted from The Gunny Sack-www.thegunnysack.com)

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3-4 Tbsp. half-&-half, plus more, if necessary
  • 1 Tbsp. coconut oil, melted
  • 1 Tbsp. light corn syrup
  • 2-4 drops Young Living's Peppermint Vitality Oil, to taste
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 3/4 c. powdered sugar, sifted
  • 8 oz. bag dark or bittersweet chocolate
  • Crushed candy canes, optional

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Mix together 2 tablespoons half-n-half, the coconut oil, corn syrup, lemon juice, vanilla, and peppermint essential oil.
  2. Mix in powdered sugar, one cup at a time.
  3. Add additional half-n-half until dough comes together and can be formed into a ball.
  4. Form dough into a flattened disk and place in fridge for at least 1 hour.
  5. Sprinkle surface thoroughly with powdered sugar and roll dough to 1/4" thickness. Use a small cookie cutter (1" in diameter) to create the peppermint patties.
  6. Place the "patties" on a parchment-lined baking sheet and place in freezer until hard. Repeat steps 5-6 until all dough is used.
  7. While patties are freezing, melt the chocolate on low in a microwave-safe bowl until melted.
  8. Remove patties from freezer, dip completely in chocolate, and sprinkle with crushed candy canes (optional).
  9. Place patties in cookie tins or other air-tight containers and store in the fridge or freezer.
