It's been awhile since I have posted here at Weeknight Dish. Life has been crazy lately and after the rush of the holiday season, I was left feeling drained and overwhelmed with all of the things going on in my family's lives! Can ya'll relate? I became so consumed with schedules, demands, and my lack of ability to say "no" and it finally caught up. So much so, that I got hit with the flu/stomach bug. It was bad (I will refrain from details!). HUGE wake-up call to my system that I needed to take a break, re-focus, and start focusing on what's most important- taking care of myself first!
How many of you can relate to that? I feel like as a mother and caretaker, I continually put myself and my needs on the back burner. I ignore signs of being worn down, stressed out, and overwhelmed. Well, my body responded in a BIG way, and I decided to make some changes.
- I started praying more and dedicating more time leaning on the One who gives me strength and direction.
- Starting each day with 30 minutes of quiet time-whether it's checking my e-mail, scrolling through Facebook, reading, or just enjoying a cup of coffee- I need this time to get my day started in the right direction.
- Forgiving myself if I don't always follow through or stick to my "schedule". If I happen to sleep past my usual wake-up time and don't get that 30 minutes to myself, I get past it and schedule that quiet time some other place during the day. My body must have needed that extra rest and I accept that!
- I reach for my oils.
Before I lose all of you, you have to understand the importance these oils have been in my life. They, along with prayer, family, and friends, pull me from my dark places. They help nourish my mind, skin, and emotional well-being. They soothe aches. They brighten my spirit-which is huge during the dark, cold days of Winter. These little bottles have been such a saving grace in my life.
You're probably wondering, "What do honey throat drops have to do with this?". To help get me through these winter months of dry air and scratchy throats, I've relied heavily on these little throat drops! They combine the soothing power of honey and lemon but pack a powerful spicy punch with my favorite: Thieves Essential Oil.
What is Thieves?
Thieves contains: Rosemary, Cloves, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, & Lemon essential oils. The story behind Thieves is that during the Dark Ages, grave robbers were robbing the bodies of those stricken with the plague. Upon their arrest, they were questioned as to how they were able to steal from those bodies but not contract the plague themselves. It turned out the men were traders of the herbs and spices listed above. It's such compelling story, that the Thieves blend was created based on the plants' protective properties.
Thieves can:
- Provide support for your immune system*
- Soothe and protect
- Be taken as a dietary supplement
- Added to natural cleaning products for added cleaning power
Can you tell this is one of my favorite essential oils? I just love it, especially during the winter! In my quest to make homemade Christmas gifts this year, I made these delicious little throat drops that have lasted for several months and are fantastic as a soothing candy, throat drop, or natural sweetener when added to a cup of hot tea (my mom's favorite method!).
It's a super simple recipe to follow. It's important to know that using a candy thermometer is necessary for achieving a hard candy. Also, I used a hard candy mold for my drops which is super cute and the perfect size! I store these in the fridge so they don't get sticky from the changing temperatures.
