The Best Salmon Marinade {with Grapefruit essential oil}

We've been doing a lot of grilling lately at my house.  Once the warm sun comes out, I rarely turn on my oven.  With the exception of baking a good cobbler or peach pie (of course)!  So the grill gets a lot of use!  Burgers, dogs, chicken...you name it.  Recently, I've been obsessed with salmon.  I like to buy Wild Caught Sockeye Salmon whenever possible to help support the environment, eat fish that is without antibiotics, and to get the healthy fats my body needs.

My favorite part of grilled salmon is the charred edges.  Is that weird?  Oh well if it is!  The crispy edge with the sweet sauce on top is so delicious.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Of course, I love my essential oils and am always looking for a new way to incorporate them into my daily life...even my recipes!  I thought, what better way than in a marinade.  And it came out great!!

The sauce is sweet and tangy with a little bite from the red pepper flakes!  The Grapefruit oil adds this wonderfully light citrus flavor that really comes through even after grilling.  Of course, you can always use your own favorite citrus oil or juice as a substitute!  Make sure to let the salmon marinade for at least 4 hours to truly let the flavors develop.  And as always with citrus oils, marinade your fillets in a glass dish.

The Best Salmon Marinade

1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 tsp. garlic, minced
1 Tbsp. grapefruit juice (or other citrus juice) OR 3-4 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil*
red pepper flakes, pinch
cilantro, chopped

*I can only recommend using 100% Therapeutic grade oils for cooking/ingestion.  A reason I chose to use Young Living Essential Oils brand.  You can read more about that here.

Mix all of the ingredients, except the cilantro, together in a small bowl.  Pour over the salmon and let marinade in the refrigerator for 4-8 hours.  Bring salmon out of the fridge 30 minutes prior to grilling to allow it to come to room temperature.  Grill to desired doneness and top with chopped cilantro.
